About this artwork
This is a study by Arthur Dove, dated 1932, made in preparation for a work titled "The 'Bessie' of New York". A study of this kind is a place to work out an idea before it is taken further, and it shows in a more immediate way how an image begins to take shape. Dove is often considered the first American abstract painter, and he was known for using a wide range of media, sometimes in unexpected combinations. This piece is a drawing, and it belongs with the other works by him that were gathered in the Alfred Stieglitz Collection.
On your wall: Its drawn, modern character suits a study, hallway or living room where a quiet, abstract piece can sit alongside books, simple furniture and neutral walls.

About Arthur Dove
Arthur Dove was an American artist and an early American modernist, often considered the first American abstract painter. He worked in a wide range of media, sometimes combining them in unconventional ways, to create abstractions and abstract landscapes. He also made experimental collages in the 1920s, and Me and the Moon, from 1937, is a fine example of his landscapes.
