A woodland drawn in ink and brown wash, where a great gnarled trunk lies fallen across the scene.

Arthur Dove's Tree II, from 1934, is a drawing in ink and brown wash. It shows a woodland with a number of trees and, in the foreground, a large fallen trunk, twisted and knotted, beside a broken stump. The warm brown tones and the line work give the scene a quiet, earthy character. Dove signed the sheet 'Dove' at the lower left. Dove is often regarded as the first American abstract painter, and his interest in natural forms can be felt in the way this landscape is handled.
On your wall: Its warm brown tones and woodland subject suit a study, a living room or a hallway, especially alongside natural materials such as wood, linen or wool.

Arthur Dove was an American artist and an early American modernist, often considered the first American abstract painter. He worked in a wide range of media, sometimes combining them in unconventional ways, to create abstractions and abstract landscapes. He also made experimental collages in the 1920s, and Me and the Moon, from 1937, is a fine example of his landscapes.
