Arthur Dove's 1942 abstraction invites a slow look, with its title offering a quiet clue to follow.

The Inn is an abstract work made by Arthur Dove in 1942. Rather than showing a scene we can easily name, it belongs to the language of abstraction that Dove explored throughout his career. He is often considered the first American abstract painter, and an early American modernist. Today The Inn is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is a work to approach openly, letting shapes and colour lead the eye before the title suggests its own associations.
On your wall: Its abstract character suits modern interiors such as living rooms, studies and hallways, where it can be a quiet point of interest.

Arthur Dove was an American artist and an early American modernist, often considered the first American abstract painter. He worked in a wide range of media, sometimes combining them in unconventional ways, to create abstractions and abstract landscapes. He also made experimental collages in the 1920s, and Me and the Moon, from 1937, is a fine example of his landscapes.
