Arthur Dove painted Distraction in 1929 in oil, in an abstract manner. A large magenta circular form with a grey striped centre sits at the heart of the composition. Crossed brown stems pass in front of it, while a yellow and pink arc, marked with small crescent shapes, curves nearby. A brown band along the base anchors the forms against the cream background. Dove is often regarded as the first American abstract painter, and the work is now in the Whitney Museum of American Art.
On your wall: The warm magenta, yellow and brown on cream suit a living room, study or hallway, especially where a single bold, modern picture is wanted.

Arthur Dove was an American artist and an early American modernist, often considered the first American abstract painter. He worked in a wide range of media, sometimes combining them in unconventional ways, to create abstractions and abstract landscapes. He also made experimental collages in the 1920s, and Me and the Moon, from 1937, is a fine example of his landscapes.
