About this artwork
Following Cubist principles, Marcoussis shows a single table from multiple perspectives, so different objects appear from different viewpoints at the same moment. Through the window, a yellow hot air balloon and the French flag can be glimpsed, a nod to the artist's adopted homeland. He was born Louis Markus in Warsaw and moved to Paris in 1903, where he met Guillaume Apollinaire, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Apollinaire urged him to take the name Marcoussis, after a French village. The work is oil on canvas, painted around 1923.
On your wall: Its Cubist structure and touch of yellow suit a living room, dining area or study where a considered, modern piece can sit comfortably alongside contemporary furnishings.
