Edward Alexander Wadsworth, 1914
A night-time view over a city, rebuilt through a shifting checkerboard pattern. Wadsworth's woodcut turns a window view into a study of colour.

Wadsworth's colour woodcut looks out over a city at night. He took his starting point from Robert Delaunay's 1911 painting La Ville (The City), and, like Delaunay, he chose a view across the rooftops after dark. Where he went his own way was in making the checkered patterning the real subject. That pattern draws the different motifs in the scene together. Wadsworth was drawn to woodcut because changing the colours could change the meaning of an image entirely. He made six versions of Open Window, each in a different colour combination. The work dates from around 1914 and was made in England.
On your wall: Its geometric pattern and modern spirit suit a study, living room or hallway, especially where a considered, graphic piece can anchor a calm or contemporary scheme.
