Lyubov Popova's Composition (Red-Black-Gold) from 1920 is an abstract collage. Cut shapes of black, red and gold paper are arranged on a cream sheet, and nothing in the image represents a recognisable object. The eye is drawn to the serrated gold form that overlaps a tilted red rectangle, which sets sharp edges against flat blocks of colour. Popova was a Russian-Soviet avant-garde artist, painter and designer, and this work belongs to her abstract output. Its limited palette keeps attention on the way the shapes sit against one another.
On your wall: The bold red, black and gold on a cream ground suit contemporary living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a graphic, geometric accent is wanted.

Lyubov Popova was a Russian-Soviet artist who belonged to the avant-garde. She worked as both a painter and a designer, and her practice moved between the two disciplines. Her work is associated with the experimental spirit of that movement, and it continues to draw the attention of those interested in modern art and design.
