Lyubov Popova made Composition in 1917, working in gouache on paper. Popova was a Russian-Soviet avant-garde artist, painter and designer, and the title points to a work built from arranged forms rather than a recognisable scene. Gouache is an opaque, matt paint, which suits clearly defined areas of colour. Today the work belongs to the Berardo Collection Museum, where it is held as part of the collection.
On your wall: Its abstract character suits modern interiors such as a living room, study or hallway, where it can sit comfortably alongside clean lines and simple furnishings.

Lyubov Popova was a Russian-Soviet artist who belonged to the avant-garde. She worked as both a painter and a designer, and her practice moved between the two disciplines. Her work is associated with the experimental spirit of that movement, and it continues to draw the attention of those interested in modern art and design.
