About this artwork

Robert Delaunay painted this work in 1913, in oil on canvas, and gave it the title L'Équipe de Cardiff. It belongs to the tradition of sport art and brings together rugby, with a ball and athletes, and a sports competition. Alongside the players, the picture also shows a Ferris wheel and the Eiffel Tower, so the game sits within a recognisable city setting. Delaunay was a French artist of the School of Paris and, with Sonia Delaunay and others, co-founded Orphism, a movement known for strong colours and geometric shapes. The painting is now in the Bavarian State Painting Collections and hangs in the Pinakothek der Moderne.

On your wall: Its modern, abstract character and sporting theme suit a living room, study or hallway, and would sit well in a contemporary space that welcomes colour and movement.

About Robert Delaunay

Robert Delaunay was a French artist associated with the School of Paris. Together with his wife, Sonia Delaunay, and others, he co-founded Orphism, a movement known for strong colour and geometric shapes. His work shows a bold handling of colour and a clear delight in experimenting with depth and tone, and his later paintings grew more abstract.
