About this artwork

This is a still life of fruit, painted by André Derain in 1920. The subject is simple and familiar, and it sits comfortably within the tradition of still-life painting. Derain first made his name as a co-founder of Fauvism, known for its bold colour. By 1910 his work had become more austere, and after the First World War he became a leading figure in the Return to order, a movement that looked back to classical ideals. A painting from 1920 belongs to that later period. The work has since passed into a private collection.

On your wall: A still life of fruit suits a dining room, kitchen or reading corner, and its measured, classical feel sits well in a modern interior.
