Les Guitares was painted by André Derain in 1922, in the years after the First World War. By then Derain had moved on from the vivid colour of his early Fauve work and was regarded as one of the leading figures of the Return to order, a new classicism in the arts. The title points to a subject of guitars, a theme that suits his measured approach to form. The painting is now in a private collection, so it is not often seen, which makes it a welcome choice for anyone who would like to live with it at home.
On your wall: Its musical subject and the restrained, classical feel of Derain's post-war period suit a living room, study or music corner, and sit well beside modern furnishings.

André Derain was a French painter and sculptor who co-founded Fauvism alongside Henri Matisse. His work from 1905 to 1906 is known for its bold, exuberant colour. By 1910 his style had grown more restrained, shaped by his study of Cézanne and the old masters. After the First World War he became a leading figure in the Return to order.
