About this artwork

Composition VII is an abstract oil painting on canvas, completed in 1913 by the Russian-born artist Wassily Kandinsky. It belongs to the Expressionist and abstract currents of its time, and today it hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Rather than depicting a single scene, the painting is understood by art historians as a blend of several themes: Resurrection, Judgment Day, the Flood and the Garden of Eden. Kandinsky is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, and this work shows his approach to painting as something built from form and colour rather than from recognisable objects.

On your wall: Its abstract, energetic character suits living rooms, studies and open-plan spaces where a modern piece can become a focal point and spark conversation.
