Paul Klee made this work in 1922, and its title, Ghost of a Genius, points to a portrait of a human figure rather than a landscape or still life. It is painted in watercolour on paper mounted with cardboard, a delicate combination of materials. Klee was Swiss-born and German, and his individual style drew on expressionism, cubism and surrealism. The work is now in the collection of National Galleries Scotland.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
