Composizione was painted in 1911 in oil on canvas and belongs to abstract art, so it invites you to read its forms and colours rather than look for a scene. Its maker, Otto Freundlich, was a German painter and sculptor who counted among the first generation of abstract artists. He admired cubism and spent much of his life in France. Today the painting is held at the Musée d'art moderne de Paris.
On your wall: Its abstract character suits modern interiors, such as a living room, studio or study, where a considered piece of early abstraction can hold its own on a quiet wall.

Otto Freundlich was a German painter and sculptor of Jewish origin, counted among the first generation of abstract artists. He greatly admired cubism and spent much of his life in France. He was murdered at the Majdanek concentration camp during the Holocaust, and his work remains an important part of early abstract art.
