Alfie's Delight was painted in 1929 by Arthur Dove, an American artist often regarded as the first American abstract painter. It is an oil painting on canvas, measuring about 58 by 79 cm, and it now belongs to the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art. The title is playful and leaves the picture open to interpretation, so you are free to find your own way into it. Dove is known for abstractions and abstract landscapes, and this work sits comfortably within that body of modern American painting.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract character suits a living room, study or hallway where you would like a thoughtful piece that sparks conversation.

Arthur Dove was an American artist and an early American modernist, often considered the first American abstract painter. He worked in a wide range of media, sometimes combining them in unconventional ways, to create abstractions and abstract landscapes. He also made experimental collages in the 1920s, and Me and the Moon, from 1937, is a fine example of his landscapes.
