In 1908 Hilma af Klint made this abstract drawing in pastel on brown paper. At its centre is a symmetrical, rounded form built from a yellow oval and segments of pink, blue and brown. The soft, chalky colours sit against the warm tone of the paper, which shows through and gives the whole piece a calm, earthy feel. The sheet carries a date, 22 February 1908, written on it. The work is known as The Five and was left without a further title. It comes from the Hilma af Klint Foundation.
On your wall: Its warm brown ground and soft yellow, pink and blue suit calm living rooms, bedrooms and studies, especially where a quiet, modern abstract piece is wanted.

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings rank among the earliest major abstract works in Western art. Much of her output came before the first purely abstract pieces by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to The Five, a circle of women drawn to Theosophy, and her diagram-like paintings give visual form to complex spiritual ideas.
