Komposition is a painting made in 1938 by Otto Freundlich, a German painter and sculptor. Freundlich belonged to the first generation of abstract artists and admired cubism deeply, spending much of his life in France. The title points to a work built from arrangement rather than a recognisable scene, so it rewards looking at how its forms sit together. Freundlich was of Jewish origin and was murdered at the Majdanek concentration camp during the Holocaust, which gives his surviving work a lasting importance.
On your wall: As a modern abstract work, it suits contemporary living rooms, studies and quiet corners where a considered, non-figurative piece can hold attention.
