August Macke, 1900
Bathing girls with a town rising behind them: a quiet, open scene that invites you to look closely at how the figures sit within the landscape.

This work by August Macke shows girls bathing, with a town visible in the background. The image appears to be a fragment of a larger composition, so the figures and the distant buildings are seen at close range, and the eye moves between the bathers in the foreground and the town behind them. Bathing scenes were a theme Macke returned to, and this one is held in a private collection. Macke was a German Expressionist painter, associated with the group Der Blaue Reiter, and he died in the First World War.
On your wall: Its subject of bathers and a distant town suits living rooms, bedrooms and hallways where you want a calm, figurative picture with a modern feel.

August Macke was a German Expressionist painter and one of the leading members of Der Blaue Reiter. Working in a lively period for German art, he took in the avant-garde movements emerging across Europe and wove the elements that interested him into his own painting. Like his friend Franz Marc, he died in the First World War.
