About this artwork

Three women sit around a yellow table, absorbed in reading and sewing. A white oil lamp stands at the centre of the group, with a bottle and a bowl of fruit close by. August Macke paints the scene in bold, saturated colour, so that an ordinary domestic moment takes on a warm, lively mood. The lamp draws the figures together, and the table becomes the heart of the picture. Macke was a German Expressionist painter and a leading member of Der Blaue Reiter, and this work belongs to that wider interest in colour as a means of expression.

On your wall: Its warm yellows and bold colour suit dining rooms, kitchens and reading corners, and bring a lively, welcoming feel to a modern living space.
