Painted in 1886, this landscape shows a walk in the forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Henri Rousseau worked in oil on canvas, and the picture belongs to naïve art, the approach for which he is known. The title invites you to wander in among the trees, and the work rewards a slow look. Today it hangs in the Kunsthaus Zürich, where it forms part of the collection.
On your wall: With its woodland subject, it would suit a calm living room, a study or a hallway, where a touch of nature brings quiet interest to the wall.

Henri Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist painter who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job collecting tolls and taxes. He began painting seriously in his early forties and, by the age of 49, had retired from that work to devote himself fully to art.
