August Macke's Tulpenstrauss, from 1912, is a still life of a bouquet of red and yellow flowers, most likely tulips. They stand in a blue-and-white ceramic vase on a grey table, beside a small picture card. The colours have a soft, pastel-like quality, and the warm reds and yellows stand out against the cool blue of the vase and the quiet grey of the table. Macke was a German Expressionist painter and a leading member of Der Blaue Reiter, and here he turns to a simple domestic subject.
On your wall: The warm flowers against cool blue and grey suit a kitchen, dining room or hallway, and would sit well in a calm living space or a bright study.

August Macke was a German Expressionist painter and one of the leading members of Der Blaue Reiter. Working in a lively period for German art, he took in the avant-garde movements emerging across Europe and wove the elements that interested him into his own painting. Like his friend Franz Marc, he died in the First World War.
