Fernand Léger painted this still life in 1926. The title, Les camées, points to cameos as its subject, arranged as objects in a studied composition. It is oil on canvas, tall in format at roughly 131 by 97 cm. Léger signed and dated the front at the lower right, then signed, dated and titled it again on the reverse. Léger is known for a personal take on cubism and for boldly simplified treatment of modern subjects, so it is worth looking at how this work handles its objects.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract character and upright format suit a living room, study or hallway where a single strong picture can anchor a wall.

Fernand Léger was a French painter, sculptor and filmmaker. He began by developing a personal form of cubism, then gradually moved towards a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subjects has led many to see him as a forerunner of pop art.
