Léger made this work in 1913, using gouache and brush and ink on paper. It measures about 50 by 64 centimetres. The title tells us the subject: two women lying down, a theme he explores through the simplified, geometric language of his early, personal take on cubism. He signed it with his initials and inscribed the date and title at the lower centre, so the work carries its own label in his hand.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract character suits a living room, study or hallway where a strong, graphic piece can anchor a plain wall.

Fernand Léger was a French painter, sculptor and filmmaker. He began by developing a personal form of cubism, then gradually moved towards a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subjects has led many to see him as a forerunner of pop art.
