About this artwork

Paul Klee painted this work in 1932 on burlap, and the coarse, fabric-like surface suits its quiet, layered look. A veiled face with watchful eyes sits at the centre. Beside it are an orange flower and a teardrop shape, small touches of colour set against pale, cloth-like areas. A blue-green border frames the whole composition. Klee, who was Swiss-born and German, drew on expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and his highly individual style shows in the simplified, symbol-like forms here. The painting is part of The Phillips Collection.

On your wall: Its pale, textured tones, blue-green border and warm orange accent suit calm living rooms, studies, and reading corners, especially in modern or lightly decorated spaces.

About Paul Klee

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
