Contemplating dates from 1938 and is one of Paul Klee's abstract paintings. He made it with paste colour on newsprint, a humble, everyday surface for such work. It measures 47.2 by 65.8 cm, so it is a fairly intimate piece rather than a grand one. The title suggests a thoughtful, unhurried mood, and the abstract treatment leaves you free to find your own way into it. The painting belongs to the Fondation Beyeler collection.
On your wall: Its abstract character suits a study, a reading corner or a living room where modern pieces sit comfortably alongside simple, uncluttered furnishings.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
