This abstract oil painting by Theo van Doesburg, made in 1923–1924, is built from rectangles in grey, black, white, olive-gold, red and blue. The colours are set out as flat, distinct areas, so the eye moves from one block to the next and the whole holds together through balance rather than through any recognisable scene. It belongs to De Stijl, the movement Van Doesburg founded and led. The signature 'TH v D 24' appears in the lower right corner. The painting is now in the Kunstmuseum Basel.
On your wall: Its clean geometry and muted greys with touches of red and blue suit modern living rooms, studies and offices, especially spaces with simple lines and plenty of wall.

Theo van Doesburg was a Dutch painter, writer, poet and architect, working across several fields rather than just one. He is best remembered as the founder and leader of De Stijl, the movement with which his name remains closely linked. His art and ideas offer a thoughtful starting point for anyone drawn to that way of seeing.
