Joseph Stella painted Coney Island in 1914, working in oil on canvas. The picture is an abstraction, so it asks to be read through shape, colour and rhythm rather than through a literal scene. Stella was an Italian-born American painter associated with Futurism, and he is best known for his images of industrial America, including the Brooklyn Bridge. This work is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, where it can be seen alongside other modern American painting.
On your wall: Its abstract character suits living rooms, studies and hallways where you want a lively, modern focal point that rewards a second look.

Joseph Stella was an Italian-born American painter associated with Futurism. He is best known for his portrayals of industrial America, above all his images of the Brooklyn Bridge. His work is also linked with American Precisionism, a movement active from the 1910s to the 1940s, and shows a keen interest in the modern city.
