About this artwork

Joseph Stella painted Neapolitan Song in 1929 in oil on canvas. The picture is stylised rather than literal: a white crane stands beside a palm frond and an exotic tree, while Mount Vesuvius sends up smoke across the Bay of Naples. Stella was an Italian-born American painter, known for his Futurist work and for his images of industrial America, above all the Brooklyn Bridge. Here the subject is quite different, a bird and plants set before a famous Italian landscape. The painting is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

On your wall: Its bold, stylised landscape suits a living room, hallway or study where a modern interior could use a lively focal point with natural subject matter.
