About this artwork

Painted in 1905, this landscape shows sunrise in the mist at Montigny, the village of Montigny-sur-Loing. The title points to the subject: early light gathering in a hazy atmosphere, where the view seems to dissolve a little into the air. Picabia is best known as an avant-garde figure associated with Dada, and this is an earlier landscape from his career. It is a quiet, atmospheric work in which the mood of the morning matters as much as the place itself.

On your wall: Its soft, misty morning subject suits calm spaces such as bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and studies, especially where a gentle landscape is wanted.

About Francis Picabia

Francis Picabia was a French avant-garde artist whose work crossed many fields. He painted, wrote poetry, made films, published a magazine and worked with typography. He is closely associated with Dada, the movement that shaped much of his outlook, and his restless, varied output reflects the experimental spirit of that circle.
