Painted in 1908, this landscape shows a corner of the Promenades in Nemours, a town in Seine-et-Marne, under a grey sky, as the title tells us. The River Loing is also associated with the picture. Picabia is best known as a French avant-garde painter, writer, filmmaker and poet, closely linked with Dada. Here he is looking at a quiet, ordinary place and its muted weather, which gives the scene a calm, softly lit mood.
On your wall: Its grey, subdued mood suits calm living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a quiet landscape can sit alongside natural materials and soft, neutral colours.

Francis Picabia was a French avant-garde artist whose work crossed many fields. He painted, wrote poetry, made films, published a magazine and worked with typography. He is closely associated with Dada, the movement that shaped much of his outlook, and his restless, varied output reflects the experimental spirit of that circle.
