Gustav Klimt, 1907
A square garden crowded with blooms, where tall sunflowers rise at the right and Klimt turns a simple plot into a field of colour.

Klimt paints a cottage garden so densely planted with flowers that the square canvas feels filled to its edges. Tall sunflowers stand right of centre, towering over the blossoms around them. The work is oil on canvas, and Klimt's signature sits at the lower left. It belongs to the Belvedere collection. Although Klimt is best known for figures and portraits, he also painted landscapes, and this garden is one of them.
On your wall: Its crowded blooms and sunny sunflowers would brighten a hallway, kitchen, dining room or living space, especially where a square format suits the wall.

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter and a founding member of the Vienna Secession. His work helped shape Art Nouveau in Europe. He made paintings, murals and sketches, centred mainly on the female body with a frank eroticism, and also painted landscapes. Among his best-known works are The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
