Klimt painted this sunflower in 1907, working in oil on canvas. The title tells us the subject: a sunflower, a plant he chose to give a picture of its own. Today the work belongs to the Belvedere and hangs in the Upper Belvedere. Klimt is best known for figures and portraits, such as The Kiss, yet he also painted landscapes, so a flower study sits comfortably within his range. He was a founding member of the Vienna Secession and drew on Japanese art more than most of his fellow members, an influence that may interest you as you look at the work.
On your wall: A flower subject that suits living rooms, hallways and bedrooms, and brings a natural, painterly note to a modern or minimal interior.

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter and a founding member of the Vienna Secession. His work helped shape Art Nouveau in Europe. He made paintings, murals and sketches, centred mainly on the female body with a frank eroticism, and also painted landscapes. Among his best-known works are The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
