This landscape from 1900 takes Attersee as its subject, the lake that gives the painting its name. Gustav Klimt worked in oil on canvas, and the picture belongs to the Vienna Secession, the movement he helped found. Although Klimt is widely known for his figure paintings and portraits, he also painted landscapes, and this is one of them. The work is now in the Leopold Museum.
On your wall: A lake landscape like this suits calm, considered spaces such as a living room, study or bedroom, where a quiet view of water can sit comfortably.

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter and a founding member of the Vienna Secession. His work helped shape Art Nouveau in Europe. He made paintings, murals and sketches, centred mainly on the female body with a frank eroticism, and also painted landscapes. Among his best-known works are The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
