This 1920 composition by Fernand Léger is built from simplified, graphic forms. A red-and-white fan shape sits among tubes, discs and shapes that recall letters, all in strong, clear colour. The mechanical character of the forms echoes his earlier Typographer works of 1918–19. Léger, a French painter, sculptor and filmmaker, began with a personal form of cubism and went on to treat modern subjects in boldly simplified terms. Some regard him as a forerunner of pop art.
On your wall: Its strong red, white and graphic shapes suit a modern living room, a studio or study, or a hallway that could use a confident splash of colour.
