Painted in 1940, Around the Circle is a late abstract work by Wassily Kandinsky. A large red ring surrounds a black circle at its heart, and around it float colourful forms, some curved and organic, others more geometric. They hover against a dark grey ground, which makes each colour stand out clearly. The materials are listed as oil paint, enamel and canvas. The work is held in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. There is no single focal point to follow, so the eye can wander between the shapes and return to the circle.
On your wall: Its strong red and black against a dark grey ground suit contemporary living rooms, studies and hallways, where it can serve as a confident focal point.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
