About this artwork

Kirchner's 1913 painting shows a red tree on a beach, a landscape that also belongs to the long tradition of bathing scenes in art. The title points to the tree as the centre of attention, and its colour sets it apart from its surroundings. Kirchner was a German expressionist painter and printmaker, and one of the founders of Die Brücke ("The Bridge"), a group that helped lead to Expressionism in twentieth-century art. This painting is now in a private collection.

On your wall: The bold red tree and coastal subject suit living rooms, studies and hallways where a modern, expressive landscape can be a lively focal point.
