Painted in 1927 in oil on canvas, this composition comes from Piet Mondrian's mature abstract style. Through the 1910s his work moved from Cubism towards a grid-based language, and he gave up depicting the natural world altogether. Here he keeps to horizontal and vertical rectangles, the three primary colours of red, yellow and blue, and black and white. Mondrian was a deeply thoughtful artist. He believed that, after the devastation of the First World War, abstract compositions like this could encourage a more harmonious society by speaking in a universal visual language.
On your wall: Its crisp geometry and primary colours suit modern interiors, from minimalist living rooms and studies to bright, open-plan spaces that benefit from a clear, graphic focal point.
