Composition in colour A dates from 1917 and is an abstract painting in oil on canvas. Mondrian was a Dutch painter and art theorist, and one of the pioneers of abstract art in the twentieth century. Over the course of his career he moved away from figurative painting towards an increasingly abstract style, until his vocabulary was reduced to simple geometric elements. This work belongs to that path, and it invites you to look at colour and form for their own sake rather than for any scene they might describe.
On your wall: An abstract work with a clear, restrained character, it suits modern and minimalist interiors such as living rooms, studies and hallways where you want a calm but considered focal point.
