Karl Blossfeldt, a German photographer and sculptor, made this gelatin silver print of an Oriental poppy in Berlin between 1928 and 1932. The print measures about 26 by 19 cm. The category listing points to the poppy's fruit as the subject, so the seed capsule, rather than the flower, is the focus. Blossfeldt is best known for close-up photographs of plants, drawn from his interest in the way they grow. Many of these were published in 1929 as Urformen der Kunst. This work belongs to that body of plant studies.
On your wall: Its restrained black-and-white tones and botanical subject suit calm, minimal spaces such as studies, hallways, and quiet living rooms, especially alongside natural materials.
