Karl Blossfeldt, 1928
Six maidenhair fern fronds uncurl against a pale ground in Karl Blossfeldt's close, quiet black-and-white study from 1928.

Karl Blossfeldt's 1928 photograph looks closely at six young maidenhair fern fronds, each still curled in the tight spiral of a fiddlehead. Shot in black and white against a pale background, the fronds become almost graphic forms, their curves and fine stems easy to follow. The image belongs to the body of plant photography gathered under the title Urformen der Kunst, published in 1929. Blossfeldt was a German photographer and sculptor, and is best known for these close studies of plants and the ways they grow.
On your wall: Its soft greys and pale background suit calm, minimal spaces such as a hallway, study or bedroom, and sit well beside natural wood or white walls.
