Painted in 1910, this cityscape shows the Royal Palace Church in Copenhagen, with buildings of Christiansborg Palace forming part of the scene. Vilhelm Hammershøi, the Danish painter best known for his poetic, subdued portraits and interiors, here turns his attention to the architecture of the city. The work is oil on canvas and is held in the Nationalmuseum. It is a calm, measured view of a building and its surroundings.
On your wall: Its restrained, architectural subject suits calm living rooms, studies, hallways and offices, particularly in minimalist or neutral schemes where a quiet city view can sit comfortably.

Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter, sometimes written as Hammershoi in English. He is known for portraits and interiors with a poetic, subdued quality. In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
