Vilhelm Hammershøi painted this view of a courtyard at Strandgade 30 in 1899, working in oil on canvas. The title points to an interior space, and the picture suits a painter often admired for his poetic, subdued interiors. Rainer Maria Rilke once wrote that Hammershøi's work is wide-ranging and slow, and that it rewards those who take their time with it. The painting is held today by the Toledo Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its restrained, quiet subject suits calm living rooms, studies, hallways and bedrooms, especially where a minimalist scheme leaves space for a single considered picture.

Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter, sometimes written as Hammershoi in English. He is known for portraits and interiors with a poetic, subdued quality. In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
