Painted in 1927, this work by Piet Mondrian takes its title from the three colours at its heart: red, yellow and blue. It belongs to abstract art and is made in oil paint on canvas. Mondrian began as a figurative painter and moved step by step towards abstraction, until his language was reduced to simple geometric elements. This composition shows where that path led. Today the painting is held in the Kröller-Müller Museum.
On your wall: Its restrained primary colours suit bright, uncluttered rooms, such as a living room, study or hallway, where a single clear picture can anchor a plain wall.
