About this artwork

Mondrian painted this work in oil on canvas in 1935. It belongs to the language of verticals and horizontals he developed after joining the De Stijl movement in 1917: black straight lines dividing a mostly off-white ground and framing smaller blocks of colour. Rather than depicting objects, the painting relies on line, colour and composition themselves. For Mondrian and other De Stijl artists after World War I, such abstraction offered a universal visual language and a way to imagine a more harmonious society.

On your wall: Its restrained geometry and clear lines suit modern, uncluttered rooms such as living spaces, studies and hallways, especially where a calm, ordered focal point is wanted.
