Painted in 1935 in oil on canvas, this is an abstract work by Piet Mondrian. It belongs to the Tate collection, where it is held today. Mondrian moved over the years from figurative painting towards an increasingly abstract language, eventually reducing his vocabulary to simple geometric elements. This composition comes from that mature way of working, and it asks the viewer to look at structure rather than at a recognisable scene.
On your wall: Its restrained, geometric character suits modern living rooms, studies and hallways, especially in uncluttered spaces where a clean, ordered image can stand on its own.
