Vilhelm Hammershøi, 1890

This is a study that Hammershøi made in 1890 for a larger painting of the same year. In the finished work he replaced the chair with a woman. Here the chair stands alone before a tall, curtained window, and the room is painted in soft grey tones. At either side, the ends of two white beds just enter the picture. Nothing else competes for attention, so the eye settles on the chair and the light from the window. It is a good example of the subdued interiors for which Hammershøi is known.
On your wall: Its soft greys and uncluttered composition suit calm bedrooms, quiet studies and minimalist living spaces where a still, restrained picture can sit comfortably.

Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter, sometimes written as Hammershoi in English. He is known for portraits and interiors with a poetic, subdued quality. In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
