This is an interior view from the artist's own home, painted by Vilhelm Hammershøi in 1901. It is oil on canvas, and it belongs to the Finnish National Gallery, where it is held at the Ateneum. Hammershøi, a Danish painter, is known for poetic, subdued portraits and interiors, and this work sits squarely within that part of his output. In 1905 Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and slow, and that it rewards those who take their time with it.
On your wall: Its calm domestic subject suits living rooms, bedrooms, studies and hallways where a restrained, contemplative picture can sit quietly.

In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
