Painted in 1905, this landscape shows the Broekzijder windmill at the Gein, set among grass and pasture beneath a sky of drifting cloud. It is an oil painting on canvas, and it belongs to Mondrian's figurative work, from the years before he moved step by step towards abstraction. The scene is built from a few simple elements: the mill, the open land and the large sky above them. It gives a quiet view of the Dutch countryside, and it shows the painter at an earlier stage of a career that would later change direction entirely.
On your wall: Its calm pasture, sky and single windmill suit living rooms, studies and hallways where a restrained, natural landscape is welcome.
