Painted in 1888, this is one of Vilhelm Hammershøi's interiors, a subject he returned to often. The title places us in a dining room on Frederiksberg Allé, and the picture invites you to look slowly at the room itself. Hammershøi is known for poetic, subdued portraits and interiors, and this work belongs with the latter. In 1905 Rainer Maria Rilke wrote that his art is wide-ranging and slow, and that it always gives us something to say about what matters in art. It rewards that kind of patient looking.
On your wall: Its quiet domestic subject suits a dining room, hallway, study or any calm space where a restrained, contemplative picture can sit comfortably.
