About this artwork

Piet Mondrian painted this farm scene in 1897, working in oil on card. The title tells us what to look for: a farm, with washing hung out on a line. The work is small, around 31.5 by 37.5 centimetres, and sits among his naturalistic paintings, made long before he moved towards abstraction and the simple geometric forms he later became known for. It shows the Dutch painter at an earlier stage, observing ordinary rural life in a straightforward, figurative way.

On your wall: Its calm rural subject suits a hallway, study or bedroom, and sits comfortably in understated, minimalist interiors that value quiet, everyday scenes.
